Japan wants to strengthen its cooperating with Mekong City of the Delta Can Tho in agriculture and human resources. The news was announced at an informal meeting between the officials from Can Tho city and a Japanese delegation headed by Mayor Wantanabe Michitaro of Nasushiobara city in Tochigi prefecture, on the 23rd of December.
Wantanabe informed the guests that Japan was planning to sign an Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) regarding collaboration between Japan and Can Tho in the fields of human resource and agricultural exchange, in the month of July. The delay was because of the epidemic of COVID-19.
Since the disease is largely in management, Japan wants the two parties to speed up the conclusion of the MoU which will open the way for expansion of trade, particularly in the area of agriculture. Nasushiobara has a reputation for strength in agriculture as dairy cows and rice being the most important items. Livestock farming is responsible 70 percent of the city's agricultural production structure.
To his credit, Pham Van Hieu, Chairperson of the city's People's Council, said farming land covers 80% of Can Tho's total land area and that hi-tech agriculture is one of the strengths.
